This is a really powerful story that will resonate unfortunately with more and more young people. Hayley is the sole daughter of a returned soldier who is suffering terrible PTSD from his two tours in Iraq and Afghanistan. Hayley's mum is dead. She was raised by her Grandma and a base bunny. For five years Hayley's dad has been driving truck and tutoring her as they crossed the country. Now he wants her to go to a regular school and life is really falling apart. I do think at times, it is almost as if Anderson is trying a little too hard. She does a really good job of portraying that nobody has a perfect life but even in comparison Haley and her Dad are in trouble. Finn and Hayley's romance is really unique. I cried.
